On Monday, February 1, the number of passengers using passes on the suburban railway system went up to one lakh in Mumbai, in a single day.

According to sources, as many as 1,06,383 passes were sold on Central and Western Railways. Moreover, the passes of 26,950 students have been extended. On Tuesday, February 2, passengers continued to struggle to get the pass along with the ticket due to which there were long queues in front of the ticket windows.

Although the spread of the coronavirus disease has been contained to some extent, the risk of contracting the contagious illness remains high. So, even if the local resumes for the general public, the instructions to use face masks, sanitisers, masks, social distancing have been given by the state government in order to safeguard the citizens.

Moreover, the trains will be available in three-time slots: from the start of the day's services to 7 am; 12 noon to 4 pm; and 9 pm to the end of the day. The timing has been restricted to avoid crowding in view of the pandemic. This means the general public will not be permitted to travel between 7 am and 12 noon and between 4 pm and 9 pm, which are considered peak travel hours.

In recent developments, the Central Railway received more than INR 2 crores in revenue from tickets and passes, mobile tickets and ATVM tickets from the ticket windows. Moreover, Western Railway also earned a revenue of around INR 2 crores. Among the new pass issuers are also essential service personnel; however, their numbers are small.
