Four new cases of Omicron have been detected in Maharashtra on Wednesday, December 15, said the state health department.

Of the new cases, two were reported from Osmanabad district, one each was from Mumbai and Buldhana.

With this, the state's tally of infections from the new variant of coronavirus rose to 32. However, out of these 25 patients have been discharged after negative RT-PCR test, taking the active cases to 7.

So far, Omicron has been reported from eight states --- Maharashtra, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Telangana, and West Bengal --- and union territories of Delhi and Chandigarh.

According to reports released by the health department, the patient from Osmanabad had a travel history of Sharjah. After he tested Omicron positive, the public health department traced his close contacts, of which one contact was also identified with the infection.

Meanwhile, the patient from Mumbai had travelled to Ireland while the one from Buldhana had returned from Dubai.

The samples for genome sequencing were taken from the international fliers and close contacts in the first week of December.

Amid rising concerns over the new strain, the Mumbai Police on Tuesday, December 14, the Dy. Commissioner of Police (Operations) and Executive Magistrate Greater Mumbai, Chaitanya S issued an order, wherein the COVID-19 restrictions in Greater Mumbai were extended till December 31.
