As the number of COVID-19 cases in Navi Mumbai has reached 254 , the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has begun preparations to expand its healthcare facilities in order to deal with the anticipated rise of positive cases. The NMMC on Tuesday approved a proposal for utilising the landmark CIDCO Exhibition and Convention Centre at Vashi as a COVID care facility.

NMMC Commissioner Annasaheb Misal told Mirror that the plan is to convert the massive exhibition centre into a 1,000-1,200-bed facility for treatment and care of COVID-19 patients. The decision comes as the satellite township witnessed six deaths on Tuesday due to the coronavirus. Currently, 75 places in Navi Mumbai have been declared as containment zones.

Along with Navi Mumbai, a special 1,000-bed hospital is being set up in Thane as well in the next three weeks. State Minister Eknath Shinde has asked the authorities to set up a hospital similar to the facility coming up in BKC in Mumbai amid the coronavirus pandemic.

With the rise in the number of cases in Navi Mumbai, there has been a big concern regarding the operations of the APMC market that falls in this area. Addressing the issue, NMMC Commissioner Misal said that it is not feasible to shut down the market. Therefore, a massive drive to screen the workers employed at the market for coronavirus had been undertaken. He added that a team of 20 doctors has screened 4,065 workers so far. The civic body is expected to begin the screening of APMC traders soon.

It is believed that the traders who are constantly traveling across various red zones in Mumbai and Thane has led to the spread of the virus in the market. Meanwhile, alcohol shops have not been permitted to open in the Navi Mumbai area as the entire municipal area fell under the Red Zone.
