The slum-dominated are in Mumbai’s Dharavi did not report a single coronavirus infection in the last 24 hours. During the early months of COVID-19 outbreak, Dharavi was a major hotspot of coronavirus in Mumbai. On April 1, eight positive cases were found in Dharavi.

Cut to now, zero positive cases were reported in Dharavi on Friday, December 25. Dharavi has spread over 2.5 sq km of area, Dharavi is considered the largest slum in Asia with a population over 6.5 lakh which is densely populated.

Community toilets were the major problem in this area due to which it was difficult to control the spread. A large number of tests were also conducted in the area by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to curb the spread of the virus in the area. Due to the efforts by the municipal corporation, over a period of time, the number of new cases began to decrease. In July, the World Health Organization (WHO) had praised Dharavi in its fight against coronavirus.

As present, Dharavi’s caseload stands at 3,788 with 3,464 recoveries, there are 12 active cases in the area, eight of them are home quarantined and four are in a COVID care centre. On May 23, the slum area had 1,500 cases of coronavirus cases.
