With more than 3,500 cases of coronavirus being reported every day in Mumbai, the number of beds in private and municipal hospitals has been increased from 12,000 to 18,000. Moreover, Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has also asked for 791 more beds in a suburban hospital in two days to treat COVID-19 patients.

According to sources, about 100-150 patients suffering from COVID-19 are admitted every day to hospitals across the city. The BMC has given the hospitals KB Bhabha Hospital (Bandra), SK Patil Hospital (Malad) in Mumbai, Dr Ambedkar Hospital (Kandivali Shatabdi), Bhagwati Hospital, K.B. Treatment for Corona patients will be resumed at Bhabha (Kurla), Maa Hospital (Chembur), Madan Malviya Hospital (Govandi), Rajawadi Hospital (Ghatkopar) and MT Agarwal (Mulund) instructions to admit patients from Monday by providing beds within two days.

In view of the spike in cases of coronavirus, BMC’s Municipal Commissioner, Iqbal Singh Chahal conducted a video conference call with the civic officials urging them to reactivate the isolation and quarantine units which include marriage and community halls and sports centres, among other venues.

The commissioner has also asked officials to use smaller nursing homes as COVID Care Units whenever necessary. Furthermore, private laboratories were directed to send the test reports to the BMC first rather than sharing them with the patient.

Meanwhile, in order to prepare civic and state-run hospitals for an increase in cases over the next few days, deans of such institutions have been directed to make sure medical accessories including ventilators, oxygen supply lines, etc are available.
