Number of COVID-19 containment zones reduce in Mumbai

Wards K-West (Andheri West), Ward T (Mulund West) and Ward P-North (Malad West) have the highest number of containment zones or red zones in Mumbai. The city has recorded over 29-lakh COVID-19 cases out of which more than 27-lakh have recovered.

The state of Maharashtra witnessed the first coronavirus case in March 2020, and ever since then, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) began the process to seal areas and buildings marking them containment zones or red zones in Mumbai. The numbers of both categories have dropped as the number of cases are decreasing.

As per reports released on January 5, 2021, the active contaminated zones in slums and chawls were 225 while active sealed buildings were 2,344 which has come down to 195 contaminated zones and 1,984 sealed buildings on January 6. At present, the least number of containment zones are in Ward-A (Colaba), G-South (Worli, Prabhadevi, Lower Parel), M-East (Chembur, Deonar, Mankhured), H-West (Bandra West), and R-South (Kandivali).

Furthermore, the top three wards with the maximum number of sealed buildings are K-West (Andheri West) with 216, T Ward (Mulund West) with 189 and P-North (Malad West) with 174.

Mumbai reported 795 new COVID-19 cases, 400 recoveries and eight deaths on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, taking the total number of cases in the financial capital to 2,96,319. According to the BMC data, the city has 7,480 active cases and over 2.7 lakh patients have completely recovered so far. The death toll in Mumbai stands at 11,155 and the recovery rate stands at 93 per cent. Besides this, over 24-lakh tests have been conducted by the BMC.

On Wednesday, January 6, Maharashtra recorded 4,382 fresh cases of the novel coronavirus. This increased the state's COVID-19 tally to 19,54,553. The state has a total of 50,808 active cases and more than 18-lakh have recovered from the infection.

More than 60 people from the state have lost their lives to this disease in the last 24 hours while the total has now mounted to 49,825. While 2,33,875 persons are under home quarantine, 2,523 others have been admitted to institutional quarantine centres. The COVID-19 recovery rate and fatality rate in the state stand at 94.79 per cent, and 2.55 per cent respectively.

Meanwhile, India reported 20,346 new cases, 19,587 recoveries and 222 deaths taking the tally up to 1,03,95,278 on Wednesday, January 6. According to the data by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in total 1,00,16,859 have completely recovered. The death toll is at 1,50,336 in the country. At present, there are 2,28,083 active cases. According to the ICMR, 17,84,00,995 samples have been tested up to January 6.
