The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has decided to start an Outpatient Department (OPD) for mucormycosis at three civic hospitals in Nerul, Vashi and Airoli.

This development comes after six cases of mucormycosis were reported in the city.

NMMC chief Abhijit Bangar held an urgent meeting after a few cases of mucormycosis were reported among COVID-19 patients who have diabetes, kidney-related diseases or organ transplant and discussed in detail the measures to be taken in this regard.

He also mentioned that post-recovery from coronavirus, patients who have diabetes, kidney ailments, or a history of organ transplant are at a higher risk of contracting mucormycosis. Hence, the NMMC call centre has been asked to keep tabs on all the recovered patients from 10 days to six weeks when they are most vulnerable to the fungal infection.

In addition, Bangar directed the Health Department to immediately start OPDs for mucormycosis in the three civic hospitals in Vashi, Nerul and Airoli. If a person is diagnosed with the disease, he or she will be treated at the Vashi civic hospital and supplementary medicines will be provided.

During the meeting, a senior doctor said that treatment of patients with coronavirus requires the use of Remdesivir injection and steroids. This raises the blood sugar of the patient even if he is not diabetic. This proportion is also found to be very high in some patients in post-operative treatment. Therefore, some patients with diabetes or kidney disease or organ transplants are at risk of developing myocardial infarction.

In myocardial infarction, the fungus grows in the sinuses on the side of the nose. Due to the weakened immune system due to COVID-19, the fungus grows rapidly and spreads to the eyes, throat, and brain. Runny nose, watery eyes, red eyes, swollen eyes, blurred vision, sore or swollen cheeks and toothache are the primary symptoms of this disease. If the person feels these symptoms, he should immediately consult an ear, nose and throat specialist.

The rate of spread of myocardial infarction is high and the greater the incidence, the more likely the patient is to be deceived. Therefore, the nodal officers in the corporation have been directed to keep track of all the mortalities after the COVID-19 recovery. If post-recovery, any patients find these symptoms, they should immediately report to the nearest urban primary health centre or the OPD, Bangar added.
