After the Dr. Payal Tadvi suicide case came to light, civic-run hospitals have rolled up their sleeves and are trying to ensure students' well-being. It was alleged that Dr. Payal Tadvi had complained about mental harassment to the senior authorities but it had fallen to deaf ears.

B.Y.L. Nair along with four other civic-run hospitals i.e. KEM in Parel, LTMG in Sion, HBT Cooper in Juhu and Nair Dental Hospital have joined in to outsource counsellors from Thane's Institute of Psychological Health (IPH). IPH will initiate a mental health programme for over 6,000 resident doctors and several MBBS students.

There will further be a dedicated helpline which will ensure the anonymity of the student or the doctor seeking help for his/her problems or grievances. The initiative is named as 'Ways and Waves' and is welcomed by the doctors as well as the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD).

In a recent RTI which was filed by activist Shakeel Ahmed Shaikh, it came to light that before Dr. Payal Tadvi's suicide case, there were 4 complaints of ragging in Nair Hospital. Taking into account all circumstances, outsourcing counsellors is a positive step to go ahead.
