Streptococcus pneumonia virus is a prominent case of pneumonia in children under five. Thus the PCV vaccine has been introduced into the universal vaccination drive to protect children from the said disease. As per a government order, the PCV vaccination drive has commenced in the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation area from today. Ansh Gajanan Madekar, a six week old baby of Shivajinagar MIDC at Minatai Thackeray Hospital Nerul of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, has become the first benefactor of the PCV vaccine here. 

Navi Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar is directing the universal immunization program. Total 118 permanent immunization sessions are being conducted every month at the Navi Mumbai Corporation hospitals and civic primary healthcare centres. Moreover, 324 external contact sessions and 28 mobile sessions are conducted. Meaning, 470 vaccination sessions are being organized every month as part of the program to prevent the spreading of 12 diseases in 7 phases to protect children till 6 years of age against several illnesses. This now also includes the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV). The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has attained 1500 PCV vaccine doses which will be offered to the beneficiaries, free of cost. PCV vaccine's first dose will be given to a six-week-old child, and a fourteen-week-old child will be given another dose followed by a booster dose to a nine-month child. 

Medical Officers of Navi Mumbai's Municipal Corporation have been given formal training. ANMs on PCV vaccine has been undertaken along with training of ASHA volunteers and Anganwadi workers. A workshop has also been organized to disseminate information regarding the PCV vaccine. 

The Municipal Commissioner is also urging parents of babies who are 6 weeks old in the corporation's area to get their child the free PCV vaccine at any municipal hospital or civic health care centre.
