Over the last few days, people citizens have criticised the Serum Institute of India (SII) for not being able to provide enough vaccines for the country. Rumours are being spread about the manufacturer and the team has been receiving threats for not being able to get the vaccine. Responding to the same, the CEO of SII, Adar Poonawala, took to social media to express his views.

In recently held interviews, Adar stated that he is being threatened repeatedly. On the other hand, reports are being shared that vaccine production had slowed down due to a lack of orders placed by the government. However, Adar has clarified them by sharing a statement on Twitter, with a message that read, "Amongst multiple reports it is important that correct information be shared with the public."

He confirmed that his views have been misinterpreted by the media. "First of all, vaccine manufacturing is a specialised process, it is therefore not possible to ramp up the production overnight. We also need to understand that the population of India is huge and to produce enough doses for all adults is not an easy task," he said.

Adar stated that the firm has received orders for more than 26 crore doses, of which approximately 15 crore doses have been provided. On the other hand, the government is said to have paid 100 per cent advance sum for the next 11 crore doses.

Understanding the demands, he said, "...everyone wants the vaccine to be available in the quickest possible time. That is our endeavour too and we are making every effort to achieve that. We shall work even harder and strengthen India's fight against COVID-19."
