On Tuesday, June 1, Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi wrote a letter to the Centre urging the government to reduce the mandated gap between two COVID-19 vaccine doses for students travelling overseas for further studies.
Moreover, the MP further took to Twitter to share the letter she wrote to health secretary Rajesh Bhushan.
Maharashtra has initiated the vaccination for students travelling overseas for further studies, however the 12-15 week mandated gap by ICMR has led to apprehension about receiving the 2nd dose on time. Meanwhile, Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday, May 31, requested the Centre to reduce the gap between the two doses of Covishield for foreign-bound students who received the first dose before the fresh guidelines came into being.
Moreover, the BMC added that these students should be allowed to get the second dose in 6-8 weeks from the first dose. Earlier on May 13, the Government of India extended the gap between two doses of Covishield to 12-16 weeks from the earlier norm of 6-8 weeks.
The state government of Maharashtra, in a recently taken decision, announced that the students from Mumbai who have planned to visit the universities abroad for higher studies will have to get vaccinated before travelling. Centres will also be administering vaccines to these students on priority.
The announcement was made on Friday, May 28, 2021, and officials from the government confirmed that currently, three centres - Rajawadi, Cooper and Kasturba - operated by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will be permitting these students for vaccination, but they will have to present their confirmed admission letter from international universities to the authorities. The process will be conducted over three days from Monday to Wednesday, i.e. on May 31, June 1 and June 2, 2021.
