According to a recent study by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the protection level of the COVID-19 vaccine Covaxin depends on whether you have contracted the coronavirus before or not.

In a pilot study conducted on 114 healthcare professionals, it has been found that previous infection plus the first dose of Covaxin is equivalent to two doses of the vaccine in individuals who have not been infected by the virus.

Covaxin, the first vaccine by India was approved by the government for emergency use back in January. The doses for the same are given at a gap of four to six weeks.

Meanwhile, as the gap between the two doses of Covaxin and Sputnik V is much less than the interval between the Covishield vaccine, speculations are being made that the demand is likely to witness an increase. Moreover, the production of Russia's coronavirus vaccine Sputnik V in India is expected to come fully on stream in September, the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) had earlier informed.

On the other hand, the Central government had earlier said that children aged 12 years and above may get the vaccine from the first week of October. As per the information, the vaccine will be first given to those children who are battling a serious disease. This statement comes amid concerns that the third wave is more likely to affect children.

The COVID panel chief N K Arora said that details of the vaccination of children between 12 and 17, including prioritising those with health complications, will be announced before the Zydus Cadila vaccine is rolled out, which will be by end of October.
