Sion hospital is currently treating a patient who is suffering from ‘sleep sex’, a condition of some sorts and doctors consider this condition as a rare one. They also feel that sex education is very important to prevent such a situation.

A 21-year-old engineering student who stays in a boys hostel with his friends was unaware that he used to grope others around him and masturbate while sleeping. When his friends discussed this with him, he rushed to Sion Hospital seeking medical help.


Such cases are very rare and often go unreported. This is also known as 'Sexomania'. The patient tries to make physical contact with his friends or masturbate while sleeping. We have studied his case and we are giving him medical help,” Dr Sagar Karia, Psychiatrist, Sion Hospital.

How does this condition arise?
Many youngsters are habituated of watching pornography and after watching it, they keep thinking about the content. And when they try to suppress their urge along with hormonal changes, such a situation could arise. 

What can be done?
A 21-year old adult needs to focus on grooming them for life and start learning maturity. It is also important for them to get used to hormonal changes, as it is a significant change in their body, during early adolescence.
