To strengthen the public health system, a Palliative Care Centre (PCC) has been started for cancer patients at Cama Hospital from March 1. Apart from this, the hospital is also planning to start brachytherapy treatment to provide more precise radiation treatment to patients. In this method, cancer is treated by placing radioactive sources inside or near the tumour.

Palliative Care Centre

This palliative care centre has been started recently for patients in the cancer department.

Sperm and egg donation

“In private hospitals, if you donate sperm, you get lakhs of rupees. But we do not pay the donors, so no one comes forward to donate sperm here,” said Tushar Palave, deputy superintendent.

On the other hand, one session can cost around Rs 25,000. The hospital has so far received four ova and four frozen embryos, out of which one embryo has been successfully implanted.

“Now we are waiting for good news from the woman,” said Palave.

What is brachytherapy?

Brachytherapy is a method of radiation therapy in which a small radioactive source is placed inside or near the tumor, which delivers precise radiation to the cancer cells.

Common uses:

  • Cervical cancer
  • Prostate cancer
  • Breast cancer

Types:

  • HDR (High Dose Rate)
  • LDR (Low Dose Rate)
  • PDR (Pulsed Dose Rate)

Benefits:

  • Precise radiation treatment
  • Fewer side effects
  • Shorter treatment duration
  • This therapy is often used in conjunction with External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT).

Paid nursing home facility in the hospital

The paid nursing home facility started by the hospital has generated at least Rs 48.6 lakh in revenue in the last three years.

“It is not only the poor who come to public hospitals. People who can afford subsidised treatment also come here. Especially after the Covid pandemic, patients needed proper spacing between beds. So we started this facility and it has been successful,” said authorities.

Daily charges:

For the first 7 days – Rs 600

From the 8th day onwards – Rs 2000

Most of the time, patients do not need to stay for more than a week. He also explained that there is no difference in the medical facilities in this paid ward and in the general ward.
