The number of Coronavirus cases in the country and increasing at a fast pace and this has become a cause of worry and panic for some. The total tally of active in India stands at 942, out of which Mumbai has 88 cases.
As per the state health department on Sunday, out of these 88 COVID-19 positive cases, 90 per cent cases are of those who are asymptomatic, which is they had no noticeable illness. It is only 10 per cent of these patients that have symptoms and percentage of people that are critical stands at 3 per cent.
The state health department revealed that on Sunday morning, 155 patients were undergoing treatment in various state hospitals. Of these, 137 had no symptoms, 14 had symptoms and four were critical. Majority of the people that are testing positive are being treated at Kasturba hospital.
There are also concerns that most people in their old age will not be able to make it if they catch coronavirus. Debunking this myth, Dr Anup Kumar Yadav, commissioner, National Health Mission, said that “Most patients in the state are doing well and don’t have serious symptoms. We have discharged 35 patients so far and many were senior citizens”.
He further went on to elaborate that the majority of deaths have been among senior citizens with underlying conditions, barring the deaths recorded over the weekend. Over the weekend the two people who could not make it were both in their 40s but they had an underlying condition of diabetes/hypertension. Infectious disease experts reiterated that in a majority of patients the illness could be mild. “Globally, in about 80 per cent the illness has been manageable and people recover. It’s the remaining 20 per cent that may need ICU and ventilator.
Having said that BMC is leaving no stones unturned to make sure that they have adequate beds and ventilators if the situation arises.
