The number of beds in the maternity ward at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital, Thane Municipal Corporation has been increased to 90 to accommodate the rising number of women coming for childbirth. In addition, considering the influx of patients from the maternity ward in Mumbra, Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao has instructed that the MM Valley Maternity Hospital at Swatantryasewak Hakim Ajmal Khan Hospital be designated as an extended centre of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital, and that a fully equipped obstetrics department be started there as soon as possible.

Currently, the maternity department at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital receives about 200 outpatients daily, and the postnatal ward now has a total of 70 beds. On average, 18 deliveries take place every day, while in October 2025, the daily average was 22 deliveries. At times, 98 women are admitted in the ward simultaneously. Women from the Thane Municipal area, surrounding regions, and Thane rural and Palghar rural areas come here for childbirth, which often results in all beds being fully occupied.

To address this situation, a meeting was held on Friday in the office of Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao, attended by Additional Commissioner Sandeep Malvi, Deputy Commissioner (Health) Umesh Birari, Medical Health Officer Dr. Prasad Patil, Hospital Superintendent Dr. Rakesh Barot, and Hospital Director Dr. Aniruddha Malgaonkar.

During the meeting, the pressure on the maternity ward at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital was discussed in detail. It was noted that around 100 pregnant women per month are referred from the Swatantryasewak Hakim Ajmal Khan Hospital’s maternity ward to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital. Dr. Barot suggested that if emergency cesarean section facilities are made available at the MM Valley maternity ward, fewer women would need to be sent to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital. This would reduce the burden on the hospital’s maternity department and free up beds.

Accordingly, Municipal Commissioner Rao has instructed that a plan for staffing, equipment, and other necessary resources be presented on Monday to start a fully equipped maternity facility at Swatantryasewak Hakim Ajmal Khan Hospital as soon as possible. The commissioner also directed that this maternity department be launched quickly as an extended centre of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital.
