It has come to light that a Kalwa resident of Maharashtra's Thane city who went to take COVID-19 vaccination at a health centre in Kalwa east was mistakenly given an anti-rabies vaccine (ARV).

The man, identified as Rajkumar Yadav, said he went to the centre to inquire if he could get vaccinated since he recently underwent lower back surgery.

He then claimed that he found it suspicious when the nurse jabbed him in both arms. He further added that the nurse did not ask him to show any papers or ask what dose he was there for. After learning he had been given the anti-rabies vaccine, he went to the local corporator and narrated the incident, following which an inquiry was held.

Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), acknowledging the incident suspended both the doctors and the nurse.

Sandeep Malvi, additional municipal commissioner, TMC addressing the situation, said that the patient had gone to inquire about Covishield vaccine at Atkoneshwar Nagar primary health care centre. The medical officer in charge gave him case papers for the Covishield vaccine, asking him to wait in the queue.

The centre administers other vaccines as well apart from COVID-19 vaccination.

Yadav mistakenly sat in the ARV queue, and when his turn came, the concerned nurse did not ask for papers. She assumed he was there for ARV and gave him the shot, said Malvi adding that Yadav is now in stable condition and monitoring his health.
