As per civic data, Thane City and the district are witnessing a small surge in coronavirus cases. Although 49 cases were identified in Thane city on August 9, it increased marginally to 57 on the 14th of August. Meanwhile, Thane district’s COVID-19 cases rose from 183 to 233 during the same period.

Data from the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) reveals that the positivity rate fell to 1.6 per cent on August 15 while it stood at 2.1 per cent last week. A surge in cases was expected given that the local administration opened up markets last week.

Experts said that a surge, even if minor, should be taken seriously given the pending threat of the third wave. “It is natural for people to flock outside after being locked up for long, but we must not forget that any slip-up could cause an escalation in infections, something that was noticed before the second wave,” an activist was quoted as saying by TOI.

Civic authorities said that the overall positivity rate was low thanks to the safety measures taken by the residents and a general increase in the pace of vaccinations.

Medical Officer of Health at TMC, Dr V Deogekar said, “There is a rise in cases but it is minor and the situation is in control. However, irrespective of the wave coming or not, it is imperative for residents to remain careful and follow all safety protocol.”
