The KEM hospital’s canteen has turned out to be a hotspot for the coronavirus as it was frequently visited by doctors or families of the patients suffering from COVID-19. The frequenting people would gather around for a cup of coffee or snacks which led to the contagious disease spread so rapidly. So far, approximately 21 servers have tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

The hospital has been treating hundreds of positive patients for the coronavirus in its wards. The authorities have confirmed that 21 of their 27 servers have been tested positive, following which it has completely been sealed. As per sources, two elderly managers with symptoms were treated at the hospital while the rest of the asymptomatic patients were sent to the quarantine centres.

The KEM hospital had earlier come under the scanner with the death of a worker posted in the coronavirus ward. This had given birth to huge protests by the health workers and other employees outside the state-run facility. In the past, groups of doctors, paramedics and others were seen protesting in masks with their protective gear.

According to sources, the worker was a daily wager who had allegedly not been given leave though he had been showing symptoms for a while. However, after he died, the body of the deceased had been kept at the hospital mortuary overnight. This sparked huge protests where the health workers along with the activists have demanded financial help for his family, along with some kind of compensation for the wrongdoing.

The KEM Hospital along with many others in Mumbai is run by the civic body, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. As Mumbai turns into the epicentre of the coronavirus, the hospital has been stretched to the limit because of the rising number of cases and an inadequate number of employees. With the outbreak of coronavirus and Maharashtra being the hotbed of the contagious infection it now stands at 1,20,363 cases whereas Mumbai stands at 62,875 cases.
