The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has announced that it will spend ₹50 crores to purchase 5 lakh coronavirus vaccines through the global tendering process.

This comes as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recently extended the deadline of the global tender for vaccines to May 25.

Mayor Naresh Mhaske said that the required amount will be taken from the ₹200 crores allocated for COVID-19 mitigation measures in the 2021-22 state budget.

“There is a need to widen the ambit of vaccination in city and cover a majority of residents,” Mhaske said.

However, this move has led to criticism from the opposition BJP. “Officials said the corporation treasury may not be financially able to purchase the huge stock following which we asked the ruling party as to how they will procure the stock,” BJP leader Manohar Dumbre said.
