Typhoid, hepatitis cases see a spike this year, reveals BMC data

According to a data revealed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)’s health department, 547 cases of typhoid were reported in various civic hospitals between January and April this year compared to 392 in the same period last year.

Meanwhile, hepatitis cases, which had dropped to 62 between January and April 2021 during COVID-19 induced lockdown, increased to 178 in the same period this year.

Whereas 2,607 cases of gastroenteritis were reported between January and April 2018, the number stands at 1,609 for the same period this year.

Experts stated that the number of water-borne cases dipped at the beginning of pandemic because fewer people ate out or drank contaminated water.

But now, the cases in the city have increased in the last and it is attributed to peak summer season, experts exclaimed. However, the civic health officials have claimed that the rise is not significant when compared to the pre-COVID era.

BMC executive health officer Dr Mangala Gomare said the number of gastroenteritis and hepatitis cases seems to be declining over a period of the last five years.
