The state government of Maharashtra and the local civic bodies, over the last few weeks, have been carrying out the vaccination drive against coronavirus in and around Mumbai. Several healthcare and frontline workers have been a part of the drive, and the corporation has given permission to 20 additional private hospitals to offer vaccines to health workers. However, as planned, these hospitals will only be able to vaccinate their staff and this will be implemented from Tuesday, February 16, 2021.

Reports state that many private hospitals in Mumbai had expressed interest in participating in the vaccination process after the program to vaccinate health workers began in the first phase of the drive. The coronavirus vaccine was free for the employees and to ensure safety, private hospitals were not given permission by the corporation as they suspected  the possibility of misuse.

A few days later, vaccination drive entered the next step where emergency workers also received the same. Furthermore, the second dose of vaccine was also given to health workers from Monday, February 15, 2021. Keeping this process in mind, it is expected that the first phase of vaccination will be completed soon, and to strengthen the dive, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has given permission to 20 interested private hospitals to vaccinate their employees.

To ensure safety, the permitted hospitals have been inspected the premises to ensure that vaccine storage facilities and manpower are available, along with the facilities required for vaccination. Thetraining was also given on Monday to the selected staff members and they have been asked to use the co-win app during the process. The drive will be conducted at these hospitals from Tuesday, February 16, confirmed Suresh Kakani, Additional Income Commissioner, NMC.

The list of 20 hospital includes large hospitals, and if some more hospitals come forward, they will also be inspected and allowed. However, the civic body has stated that it would not be appropriate to allow small hospitals with low staff numbers.

So far, as many as 90,000 health and 24,000 emergency services personnel have been vaccinated in Mumbai until Sunday, February 14, 2021. Vaccination is currently being carried out at 22 centers in Mumbai and municipal hospitals. Under the new drive, the body will ensure that the vaccine is be made available according to the number of staff registered in the app by the hospitals and those who have not been vaccinated before. Employees who have taken the first dose will be able to take the second dose at their own hospital. Kakani also clarified that all care will be taken to prevent any irregularities in the vaccination process.
