Mumbai has been under extreme burden ever since the spread of the novel coronavirus started in March. The city has recorded over 1 lakh cases along with over 5,000 fatalities. But recently, Mumbai has started to show some improvement in its effort to control the virus. After a long time, the city recorded less than 1,000 coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). However, the same cannot be said about Mumbai’s neighbouring districts.

On Tuesday, the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) reported that the region has crossed the 10,000-mark for COVID-19 cases. The total number of cases have now reached 10,017 with the death toll of 192 in the region. According to the civic body, the number of active cases in the region is 3,244. The data provided by the civic body also suggests that 6,581 people have recovered from the deadly virus in the region. Around 29 hotspots have been sealed in Vasai-Virar and the region has been under a partial lockdown till July 31.

It has been reported that the VVMC has become the fifth civic body in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) to cross the 10,000 mark in COVID-19 cases after Mumbai city, Thane district, Kalyan-Dombivali and Navi Mumbai. The areas under the MMR have seen a sudden surge in COVID-19 cases since the last two months.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra has recorded 8,369 fresh COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, taking the state tally to 3,27,031, including 1,32,236 active cases, according to the state health department. With 246 deaths reported over the last 24 hours, the state has seen 12,276 fatalities so far.
