On the occasion of World Diabetes Day, Dr. Aarti Ullal, Consultant Diabetologist at Global Hospital shares information with Mumbai Live about Type 2 Diabetes and what lifestyle changes one can indulge in to prevent it.

Dr. Ullal said, "Diabetes (DM) is a chronic, multifactorial, lifestyle disorder due to inadequate insulin production or secretion that leads to high sugar levels in the body and causing severe complications. There are many risk factors like family history, race, ethnicity, obesity, stress sedentary lifestyle, medications like steroids and medical illnesses like Polycystic Ovaries, Hypertension, Gestational Diabetes that can predispose to Diabetes."

Dr. Ullal says one can diagnose Type 2 Diabetes by blood tests that include:

  • Fasting Blood Sugar
  • Post Meal Blood Sugar
  • Glycosylated Hemoglobin.

According to Dr. Ullal, the symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes comprise:

  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Delayed wound healing
  • Increased thirst
  • Increased hunger
  • Frequent urination
  • Fatigability
  • Blurring of vision
  • Tingling
  • Numbness over feet and hands

Dr. Ullal, however, remarked that many people may be asymptomatic and are found to be diabetic on routine Heath checkups or preoperative evaluations. Further adding that there is an association between poor sleep and Type 2 Diabetes.

Dr. Ullal mentioned, "DM can affect the sleep quality. Variations in sugar levels, both high and low, can cause insomnia and daytime tiredness. Sleep deprivation can worsen sugar control as stress hormones are released that can increase sugar and insulin resistance. Other variables like erratic dietary habits in people with irregular sleep schedules put them at risk for weight gain, obesity, psychological stress and cognitive disturbances."

During the conversation, she mentioned some lifestyle changes that one can undertake to prevent Type 2 Diabetes, these entail:

  • Daily exercise and balanced nutrient-rich diet
  • Adequate uninterrupted sleep
  • Activities like yoga and meditation
  • Avoiding sugary drinks, sweets, oily foods

"Regular blood evaluation of people with high-risk factors can pick up Diabetes in the early phase (Prediabetes) and prevent its progression into full-blown Diabetes by making lifestyle modifications," concluded Dr. Ullal.
