The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will introduce monopile technology for the under-construction Coastal Road Project that will connect southern Mumbai to its suburbs on the west.
The use of this technology is a first in India and will consist of a single pile to support a pillar of a bridge instead of four piles per pillar.

Chief Engineer of the Coastal Road Project, Suprabha Marathe said, “This will save us on the space to construct the pillars. The number of piles has come down to 176 from 704 due to the introduction of this new technology. It is also environment friendly.”
The construction of test piles will conclude by July this year and their strength will be gauged by applying a few tons of pressure both horizontally and vertically. This will also help determine the monopile’s ability to sustain large weights.

“We have invited experts from different countries who have experience in this technology since this is being built for the first time in India. The machinery too has been imported from Europe,” an official said.
A single pile will be available in three diameters as per the guidelines including 2.5 metre, 3 metre, and 3.5-metre piles. Construction work is currently ongoing for the Coastal Road, although its completion deadline has been pushed a few times already.
