The long-planned Mumbai Metro Line 11 connecting Wadala to Gateway of India is set to move forward, as the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has decided to begin preliminary work on the fully underground corridor. As part of the initial phase, underground utility surveys will now be conducted, and MMRC has started the tender process to appoint a consultant for the work.
The responsibility for Metro Line 11, one of the 14 metro projects under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), was handed over to MMRC. After taking charge, MMRC prepared a revised project plan, which has already received approval from the Maharashtra government. The proposal is currently awaiting final approval from the central government.
Meanwhile, the state government has also approved the extension of Metro 11 from Wadala to Bandra Terminus. Approval for the revised extended proposal will now be sought from the Centre.
Even before receiving central approval, MMRC has initiated steps to advance the project. A tender has been floated to appoint a consultant for surveying underground utilities along the Wadala–Gateway of India route.
According to the tender, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) technology will be used to conduct surveys up to a depth of five metres. The consultant will map underground infrastructure such as water pipelines, power cables, and telecom lines, and prepare detailed reports with maps and photographs. The selected consultant will also coordinate with multiple agencies and submit a final report within one month.
Currently, Metro Line 11 from Wadala (Anik Depot) to Gateway of India is planned as a 17.5-km corridor with 14 stations. However, after the extension to Bandra Terminus, the total route length will increase to 23.5 km with 19 stations.
The extended section will include five additional stations, Chunabhatti, Sion, Dharavi, Bandra West railway station, and Bandra Terminus. The total estimated cost of the Metro 11 project is around INR 23,000 crore.
