The metro network in Mumbai city and its suburbs is expanding rapidly. Metro 8 is also expected to begin operations soon. The metro line between Dahisar and Kashimira has been completed and is likely to be inaugurated by the end of December.
Now, another line is being added to this growing network. The state government has given the green light to Metro 11 by officially approving the project.
Metro 11 will make travel from the Gateway of India to Wadala faster and more convenient. A total cost of INR 23,487.51 crore has been approved for this project. This includes the extension of the route, construction of a metro depot, and other related works. The existing Metro 4/4A (Wadala–Kasarwadavali–Gaimukh) corridor will be extended and connected from Wadala to the Gateway of India.
The new route will be 14.51 km long and will have 14 stations. Of these, 13 stations will be underground and one will be at-grade. The project will be executed jointly by the state government and the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL).
The route will reach the Gateway of India via Wadala–Sewri–Ferozeshah Mehta Road–Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus–Kala Ghoda.
Once Metro 11 becomes operational, travelling within South Mumbai is expected to become easier and quicker. Meanwhile, work on Metro 4/4A is in its final stages.
With approval for this expansion, traffic congestion in the city is expected to reduce significantly in the coming years. The load on Mumbai’s local trains may also decrease.
Currently, Mumbai has an 89 km metro network. This is projected to expand to 337 km in the future, with plans for a total of 16 metro lines. This will make Mumbai’s transportation system smarter, faster, and more modern.
