Officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had proposed the construction of new link roads to establish better connectivity between the eastern and western parts of Mumbai.

However, new developments reveal that works on these crucial infrastructure projects have been delayed as the civic body has decided to cease funding for the project. This comes as the BMC’s revenues have significantly decreased as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The BMC had originally kept aside ₹48 crores for these projects as part of the current financial year. However, it has now reallocated 100 per cent of the funding for the link road projects. This project was originally outlined in the civic body’s Development Plan 2034 (DP) in a bid to improve connectivity.

As part of the civic body’s comprehensive mobility plan or CMP, a proposal was put forward for the construction of eight connectivity links in Mumbai with the aim to reduce congestion and travel times.

Separately, the BMC recently decided to slash footpath redevelopment and upkeep funding by around 86 per cent which has been criticized by the opposition and activists alike. Further, the agency recently passed a proposal to slash around ₹2,500 crores that were reserved for infrastructure works.

Authorities said that consultants had already conducted surveys to ascertain the locations of these link roads. The civic body was also going to clear illegal encroachments on the project’s path. It is truly unfortunate that these plans have now been upended given the lack of funding as a result of COVID-19.

These cuts in the budget are also expected to impact several other projects, hinting at a tough next few months for the BMC.
