BDD chawls in Worli and N M Joshi Marg in G South Ward on Thursday, May 7, 2020, were sealed. This comes after Worli Koliwada and Jijamata Nagar had been declared as containment zones. It was only on May 7, 2020, that Worli Koliwada was de-contained. Since none of them had any travel history the authorities reacted quickly and the issue was resolved. However, with this news, it is now certain that for the next seven days BDD chawls and N M Joshi Marg is to implement a strict lockdown protocol.

The BDD chawls in Worli and N M Joshi Marg have now emerged as new hotspots with 70 new cases of COVID-19. According to the officials, the people residing refused to follow the social distancing norms. As a consequence, this decision was taken to see effective results. Kishori Pednekar, the Mayor of Mumbai, released a video message in which he announces the chawls to be sealed for a week.

“It has been observed that despite these areas reporting a high number of cases, people are not taking social distancing norms seriously. A large number of people are always out on the roads… Many times BMC and police personnel have visited the area and made announcements urging them to stay at home. However, people still come out. I have written to the police to implement strict lockdown by sealing the entrance of these chawls,” Pednekar announced.

The BMC had earlier decided to seal the areas in which a large number of cases had been found. The chawls poses a challenge for the BMC as they are three-storey old buildings with tiny rooms and a common passage with toilets on each floor. Large families stay in cramped up spaces which also makes it difficult for them to maintain distancing.

The officials have stated that so far 350 infected people have been cured whereas 50 have died from the ward. The BMC further added that cases in hotspots of Worli Koliwada and Jijamata Nagar have seen a decline since the last few days with strict enforcement of the lockdown stating that about 9,600 people live in about 120 BDD chawls in these two hotspots having seven roads which lead to these BDD chawls. All of these roads are to remain shut until further notice.
