The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to beautify Gateway of India under the Mumbai beautification Plan initiative as thousands of tourists visit the place every day.

For this beautification, the civic body will spend INR 16 crores, an official stated.

According to reports, the tourist attraction will soon be illuminated along with the beautification of the footpaths in the area.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had recently taken a review of development works in Mumbai. Thereafter, BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal announced a 16 points agenda for Mumbai beautification. He also allotted INR 1,705 crores for the project.

Chahal also emphasized that all the work should be completed till the end of March 2023 and 50 per cent work should be completed by the end of this year. He also made it clear that the work should be durable, artistic and of good quality. In the first phase of this project, the Gateway of India will be decorated.

Under the project, roads, bridges, footpaths, traffic islands, coasts and gardens will be repaired and beautified. BMC will also illuminate chowks and will maintain greenery in the city. Apart from this, the BMC has allotted a fund of INR 25 crores each to the Heritage Cell and Solid Waste Management (SWM) department for illuminating the forts and beaches of Mumbai.

For those unversed, CM had directed the BMC to announce the Mumbai Beautification Plan on September 16 in the wake of upcoming civic elections, which is likely to take place between January and February next year.

The civic body had earlier this month disbursed an additional fund of INR 240 crore — INR 10 crore to each of the 24 municipal ward offices — for carrying out several repair and reengineering works as part of the beautification of roads and footpaths in Mumbai.

Moreover, the BMC had previously earmarked INR 790 crores fund for the first phase of the ‘Mumbai Beautification Plan’, and has set the deadline for the completion of the work in December this year.
