The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Asia’s richest civic body, budget always draws attention as its allocation is more than many states' budget. This year, the BMC allocated a major chunk of the money (INR 18,751 crores) towards infrastructure and development projects from the total INR 39,038 crores budget outlay.

This is 16.74 per cent higher than the budget for FY 2020-21 (INR 33441.02 crores). Only 48 per cent of last year's allocation could be spent on various development projects, due to the raging COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, keeping its promise intact of a flood-free city during monsoon, the BMC, in a first, made a dedicated budget provision of INR 150 crore for 58 chronic flooding spots.

Monsoon flooding in Mumbai is common. To address this serious issue, the state government has spotted 386 chronic flooding spots in MCGM area out of which 171 spots have been already tackled. Whereas the remaining 118 flooding spots will be tackled before the onset of monsoon 2021, the statement said.

According to the MCGM budget, the state government has already spent about INR 1391 crores in the recent past to tackle the flooding areas and in the current year there are about 54 tenders finalised amounting to INR 535 crores and work will start on a war footing in the month of February 2021.
