The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to update the fire safety systems at 16 civic hospitals. The civic body has proposed to install smoke detectors and extractor systems.

The decision to update the fire system was taken after the Bhandara hospital fire tragedy in January that claimed the lives of 10 newborns. Reportedly, the Mumbai Fire Brigade had done a hospital inspection for updating fire fighting systems. They took a decision to decided to install smoke detectors and exhaust systems.

The system would be installed in 16 peripheral hospitals, which can detect the source through which smoke is coming and later extract it. BMC has suggested M/s Mac Enterprises for the project. On Wednesday, October 13, they will be putting forward the proposal before the standing committee meeting.

According to the reports, the project will cost around Rs 2.1 crores. The installation work will take six months after that work is allotted.

A civic official, while addressing the project, said that the smoke impairs the visibility of an individual, and lives are lost due to suffocation. He further said that these smoke detectors would alert everyone while the exhaust system would dispose of the gas.

After installing the system in 16 peripheral hospitals, the civic body will install them in major hospitals like Nair, KEM, Sion, Cooper, and other specialty hospitals, states reports.
