The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)'s pedestrian plaza project in Colaba has reached nearly 40% completion as of Sunday, July 6. The 210-meter stretch is being developed along Captain Prakash Pethe Marg. It connects Deepak Jog Chowk near Mantralaya to Bhai Bhandarkar Chowk near Badhwar Park.
Here are the unique features of the project:
1. The plaza will make the area more walkable and pedestrian-friendly.
2. It will feature ider footpaths, green corridors, better lighting, and pedestrian zones.
3. The plaza will include 3D street art and concrete pathways with special designs. Ashoka trees and decorative plants will line the walkway.
4. A multipurpose corridor will be added for community use and beautification.
5. The border wall of Badhwar Park will also be renovated. Directional sign boards will be put up to help guide people.
The civic body is carrying out the work at an estimated cost is INR 5 crore. Funds are being provided by the tourism department and the District Planning and Development Committee. As per reports, work has faced delays due to rain. But, the project is expected to finish by the end of this year.
Rahul Narwekar, BJP MLA, said the plaza will improve the travel for residents, students, and visitors. It is expected to become a new tourist attraction in South Mumbai. Former BJP Corporator Makarand Narwekar led the initial vision for the project. Sources suggest that BMC plans to build more such walkable spaces until Cuffe Parade once this phase is complete.
