The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), in August 2021, was given over an acre of land and the Jawaharlal Nehru Garden for refurbishment, and as per recent updates, officials from the concerned department are ready with the new master plan for the same.

The public works department (PWD) handed over the land to the BMC for this phase of the project, and the department has decided to work on the walkway, decorative lights, lawn mounts, etc. but retain the trees and shrubs. The decision regarding the new plan was taken at a meeting held last week, and approval is being sought from the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee (MHCC) as the responsibility for the garden belongs to the same.

Information regarding the project was published in the Times of India.

Authorities from the Nariman Point Churchgate Citizen Welfare Trust (NPCCWT), in 2013, took a legal route to ensure the encroachment was stopped by the political parties and agencies.

Over the last few months, residents and activists have been raising voice and protesting to save the land from being encroached. Demands were raised to develop and use the land wisely thereby maintain the greenery. Moreover, trusts have also asked the civic body to maintain the land and not allow any construction as the residents, especially senior citizens, prefer using the garden for their regular physical activities and walks.

BMC has been open to receiving suggestions and the department is also working on designs for a few new features at the location.
