The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has appointed eight quality management consultants (QMCs) in order to monitor and improve the quality of roads in the city.
These consultants will be responsible for maintenance and operation of roads taken up for the construction and concreting in the coming days. The BMC officials said that the QMCs will provide their expertise throughout the year.
Besides, they will also look into whether the clauses mentioned in the tenders are being complied with by the contractors. The eight QMCs are private consulting agencies that have an expertise on civil engineering and road maintenance works for a period of two years.
At present, a network of 2000 km of roads falls under the jurisdiction of the municipality. Among them, municipal officials have claimed that up to 1000 km of roads have been concreted and in the current year, 200 km of roads will be concreted by the municipality.
“These consultants will conduct quality inspections during and after construction and certify the work done by the contractors. The municipality will approve and pay for the work only after the consultants have approved the quality of the construction,” said Velarasu.
He further said that the consultant would inspect the quality of cement, steel and ready-mixed concrete (RMC) as well as the quality of raw materials and components used in road construction.
“Consultants will be paid according to their work. We will formulate a formula which will include the length and width of the roads and the municipality will pay based on the construction area covered,” P Velarasu told Hindustan Times.
There are seven Municipal Zones in Mumbai. One consultant has been appointed for each of Zones 1 to 6. Meanwhile, BMC has appointed two consultants for Municipal Zone 7 comprising Borivali, Kandivali and Dahisar.
