The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is ramping up preparations to mitigate waterlogging and flooding in the city ahead of the monsoon season. With this in mind, the agency is undertaking a new initiative to prepare stormwater drains across Mumbai.

The civic body will reportedly seek the assistance of CCTV cameras below drainage manholes to gauge the strength of the drains and detect the obstacles on its path. It’s worth noting that most of these drains were built prior to Indian independence.

The repair and cleaning work will be conducted accordingly following an assessment report, as per civic officials.

They added that the use of CCTV cameras will help them reach areas that couldn’t be accessed manually. The camera will be reportedly dropped into the manhole with a crawler which will then carry the camera inside the drain.

A civic official said, “This will speed up the work by understanding the condition of the drains and also help in receding the drainage water during monsoon, thus helping reduce waterlogging and flooding.”

Mumbai has around 38,000 manholes with 3,750 of them situated in 9 wards of the BMC. Cleaning them becomes essential ahead of the monsoons as several parts of the island city are prone to flooding.
