A renewed thrust has been given to the Versova-Bhayandar Coastal Road Project following a high-level review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. During the meeting, directives were issued to identify government-owned land along the project route and to develop it into commercial centres inspired by the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) model.

The project, which involves the construction of a 26-kilometre main coastal road and spans a total of 63 kilometres including link roads, is being developed in six phases. Tenders for its execution have already been floated. Approximately 165 hectares of land are required, the majority of which is owned by the government. Officials were instructed to ensure the land transfer is completed within 15 days. Coordination with the Department of Fisheries was also advised to secure additional land at Versova. Strict emphasis was laid on environmental conservation. It was directed that the construction be carried out without disturbing mangrove ecosystems. In addition, a proposal was made to increase mangrove coverage as a compensatory measure for any ecological disturbance. The project has been mandated to secure all regulatory approvals simultaneously to avoid delays in execution. The final deadline for completion has been set for December 2028.

Further suggestions were made to involve the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) for the development of the stretch from Mad to Versova. A sustainable revenue model was also proposed. Advertising policies allowing the installation of hoardings and flex banners along the route were advised, with the proceeds intended to be reinvested into the maintenance of the road. Appointment of an advisor to manage this strategy was also recommended. The review meeting, held at the Sahyadri Guest House, was attended by key officials including BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, Additional Commissioner Abhijeet Bangar, Thane Collector Ashok Shingare, Mumbai Suburban Collector Saurabh Katiyar, Mira-Bhayandar Commissioner Mr. Sharma, and MSRDC Managing Director Anil Gaikwad.

With multiple stakeholders involved and the project’s scope spanning infrastructure, environment, and economic development, the Versova-Bhayandar Coastal Road has been positioned not just as a connectivity solution but as a catalyst for urban growth along Mumbai’s western coastline.
