On Tuesday, December 15, fishing villages throughout Mumbai, Thane and Palghar districts backed the bandh referred by the Vadhavan Bandar Virodhi Sangharsh Sangathana (VBVSS).

Moreover, it was observed that fishing along the western coast came to standstill as villages observed a bandh to protest against the development of a new port at Vadhavan in Dahanu taluka, Palghar, which would cost INR 65,000 crore.

On Saturday, December 12, the VBVSS introduced the bandh. However, many fishermen’s co-operative societies within the metropolis and neighbouring districts of Thane and Palghar erected signage on Monday, December 14, in solidarity with the VBVSS.

To mark their protest, they announced that there will be no fishing exercise throughout numerous fishing villages in and around Mumbai.

The locals of 10 villages in Dahanu to be affected by the project – a joint venture of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) had protested on December 2 and 3. The JNPT and the Maharashtra Maritime Board are growth companions for the port mission with 74 per cent and 26 per cent fairness share.

In addition to that, on Monday, December 14, a number of fishing villages in Mumbai had introduced the closure of fish markets on December 15 just like the fishermen’s co-operative societies from Colaba-Cuffe Parade, Mahim, Madh, Naigaon, Arnala, Satpati, Vadrai and Manori, amongst others.

Ahead of the bandh, the Vangaon police station had issued a notice to VBVSS to refrain from gathering a crowd and violating the protection protocols in place for the COVID-19 pandemic.

It also stated that action will be taken in opposition to the VBVSS if a state of affairs disturbing the regulation and order is created or a big crowd is gathered without paying heed to precautions of sustaining secure distance between individuals. Vadhavan falls within the jurisdiction of the Vangaon police station.
