The Metro-3 project (Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ line) is one of the most ambitious transport projects in Mumbai. When completed, this will be the first underground metro line in Mumbai. Amid the nationwide lockdown due to coronavirus, major construction projects have come to a standstill. However, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) has been able to pace up the construction of Metro-3 lockdown.

Metro-3 is 33.5 km long metro line which will have 26 underground stations and one at-grade station. Of the 26 underground stations, MMRCL has successfully finished construction of 46 per cent of the stations. Alongside, the corporation has also finished the tunnelling work for 28 of its 32 planned tunnels. As 82 per cent of tunnelling for the project has been completed, the metro corporation has ramped up its efforts for the project.

Meanwhile, 60 per cent work has been finished for seven underground stations, more than 70 per cent work has been finished for two stations and more than 50 per cent work has been completed for seven stations. The MMRCL has finished 77 per cent of work for MIDC metro rail station whereas 72 per cent work has been completed for Vidhan Bhavan station. Along with this, MMRCL has claimed that it has finished 60 per cent work at SEEPZ, Marol Naka, International Airport, Santacruz, Shitaladevi, CSMT, and Siddhivinayak.

The MMRCL is planning to commence the services of the 33 km-long Bandra-Colaba-SEEPZ line in two phases. According to the corporation's plan, the Aarey Colony-BKC line will start from December 2021 and the complete Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ line will start from June 2022.

Meanwhile, if all goes well for the metro corporation, it will begin installing railway tracks for the metro between Aarey and BKC from June 2020. The contract for the same has already been signed between MMRCL and Larsen & Toubro Limited.
