On Wednesday, a 57-year-old Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) employee died of coronavirus. Amid the coronavirus pandemic, the BEST buses are the only means of public transport that are ferrying employees engaged in essential services. However, being on duty amid the pandemic puts them at constant risk of contracting the virus and the 57-year-old is the latest victim of the pandemic. He passed away while undergoing treatment for COVID-19 at Shatabdi Hospital.
The deceased was BEST transport wing employee and lived in Ghatkopar. On May 5, he complained of fever and was being treated by the family doctor. However, seeing no improvement in his condition, he got himself tested at a private hospital in Navi Mumbai on May 9. On May 12, the test results revealed that he had contracted the virus.
However, as no beds were available in any Navi Mumbai hospitals, he had to get admitted to Shatabdi Hospital. Despite receiving treatment, his condition worsened and he breathed his last on May 13.
Mumbai's BEST bus services have been beneficial during the coronavirus outbreak. It has helped doctors, nurses, government officers, and other essential workers reach their workplaces on time. Every day, amidst the lockdown, BEST has been running 1,300 buses in Mumbai thereby playing an important role in the crisis.
Along with the BEST employees, policemen are also the frontline workers who have been adversely affected by the pandemic. So far, six Mumbai Police officers have succumbed to COVID-19 whereas 1,001 Maharashtra police officers have tested positive for coronavirus.
