A 45-year-old Mumbai Police constable at Shivaji Nagar breathed his last on May 14. The constable succumbed to the infection two weeks after he tested positive for the virus. With this, the death toll in Mumbai Police has gone up to 6 while state police fatality tally has gone up to 9. The demise of the constable comes two days after a 55-year-old Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) posted at Sewree had died of coronavirus.
Alongside, Maharashtra Police, on Thursday, informed that 1,001 policemen have tested positive for COVID-19 so far.
Shivaji Nagar Police station Senior Inspector Sudarshan Paithankar told Mirror that Bhagwan Parte, the deceased constable, was last deployed in the police station's patrolling van when he had developed symptoms for the virus. Shivaji Nagar is one of the worst-affected areas in the city due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Paithankar further added that he was on leave since April 30 after developing symptoms and two days later, he tested positive. Earlier, the deceased constable was admitted to a private hospital in Panvel and was later shifted MGM Hospital in Kalamboli after he developed pneumonia.
Parte's wife has also been admitted to MGM Hospital as she tested positive. According to reports, his wife's condition is stable. The constable is survived by his wife and two children - a son and a daughter.
Meanwhile, as the number of cases in Maharashtra Police climbs to 1,001, 309 of them are from Mumbai police alone. Also, of the nine deceased policemen in the state, six are Mumbai Police cops. The remaining three are from Pune, Nashik and Solapur.
