The present construction activity of an anti-sea erosion wall at the Versova beach has faced a snag with the National Green Tribunal (NGT), stated reports. The Public Works Department (PWD) is conducting the work.

According to reports, the project allegedly violates the Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) clearance. With the NGT not yet giving a judgement, concerned parties have been given time till January 28, 2022, to file their affidavit.

The concerned parties entail the PWD, district collector and municipal corporation. Earlier it was claimed that the elevated walkway is being built through the beach. This is believed to be happening in spite of directions prohibiting any reclamation on the shore.

Based on an account by the Hindustan Times, presently, a 1.2 km long wall nearly eight meters from the high-tide line has been constructed. This is equipped with tetrapods dumped on its seaward side.

The narrative adds that the Earth has been backfilled into an eight-meter space in the middle of the original high-tide line and the new anti-erosion wall. The said beach, is a CRZ-I area wherein building activities aren’t allowed, the coastal authority has noted in multiple instances.

However, PWD was permitted to undertake the activity since it claimed that it was integral for protecting properties through the stretch “from further damage caused by the tidal action”, stated the report.
