The land of mill workers in Mumbai is segregated as 70 per cent of the homes are kept for the mill workers and 30 per cent of the land is reserved for transit camps. However, the Girni Kamgar Karmachari Nivara Ani Kalyankari Sangh demanded that the 30 per cent land reserved for the transit camps should be provided to the mill workers by amending the regulation by MHADA.

A request regarding the same has been made by a letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Currently, out of the 1,48,000 mill workers, the problem of residence of only 12,000 mill workers has been resolved and another 10,000 houses are being constructed. MMRDA too, will be providing a thousand houses. However, still the residence for more than 1.25 lakh mill workers is undecided and the government has no plans for resolving the issue.

And while these mill workers are homeless, the government has reserved 30 per cent of the land for transit camps. So, the leader of the mill workers’ union demanded that these transit camps must be given to the mill workers.

However, the demand is likely to cause problems with the Mumbai Board, including the MHADA Correctional Board. Because the residents of the timeworn buildings and the residents of BDD need a large number of transit camps for their residence. Therefore, there are chances of opposition to this demand from both the boards.

Meanwhile, several mill workers had recently complained that despite members of the same family getting two houses, they did not submit one house. After which, the mill workers demanded that the scrutiny of applications must be concluded first and the lottery must be issued later. So now, the scrutiny is conducted initially and then the houses are allotted.
