The Bombay High Court (HC) has taken an active role in the renovation of the skywalk near Bandra (East) Railway Station. On Wednesday, March 27, the court demanded that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) provide regular updates on the project. It has demanded quarterly affidavits of the progress and has given a 15-month window for completion.

K. P. Purushothaman Nair, a senior citizen and former judge residing in Bandra-East, filed a plea last year. He expressed concern over the lack of progress in rebuilding the foot-over-bridge (FOB) that connects the Bandra (East) railway station to the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) office end.

The court expressed its dissatisfaction with BMC's delay in starting the skywalk reconstruction project. It warned that the civic body's failure to follow previous court orders and complete the work within the stipulated time could be seen as contempt of court.

Despite the delay, BMC has assured the court that the building of the bridge began on March 1 this year. The civic body explained that administrative and procedural matters had caused some delay before the actual construction could begin.

The court has ordered BMC to submit a progress report every three months. It has also urged BMC to expedite the construction process and complete it within 15 months, if not sooner.

The High Court has also asked the BMC to discuss the building of a new pavement for commuters moving from the Bandra Railway station to BKC with the authorities of the MMRDA and the Railways.

The next hearing on this matter is scheduled for July 11 at the High Court.
