BBD chawl tenants get homes in MHADA lottery

The MHADA has conducted a computer lottery for tenants residing in the Lower Parel chawls in order to provide afforable housing.

In order to provide affordable housing, rehabilitation buildings have been constructed at Joshi Marg, Lower Parel for the people of Mumbai. Moreover, Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Jitendra Awhad inaugurated the same and distributed the flats to 272 eligible tenants in the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) transition corridor through the computer lottery system.

According to reports, State Housing Minister Jitendra Awhad, Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray, Aslam Shaikh as well as senior government officials and MHADA representatives attended the event.

In view of the occasion, Aaditya Thackeray stated, "This moment is important for Mumbai because the BDD Chawl is an integral factor with regards to the fabric of Mumbai. The huts, which provide shelter to two to three generations, will soon take on a new look and the planning of this project will also help in streamlining the urban planning of the city of Mumbai. The Government is committed to fulfilling the dream of tenants/residents of the BDD Chawls for their rightful home.”

The state government had earlier appointed a competent authority and a Deputy Collector (Encroachment/Eviction) Colaba Division, Mumbai City to determine the eligibility of the future residents. So far, the eligibility of 800 tenants in 10 plots has been surveyed and 607 tenants have become eligible so far. Moreover, MHADA has registered on-the-spot agreements with 314 of the eligible tenants (beneficiaries) for relocation to the transit slum, out of which 272 tenants have migrated to the transit slum.
