As per data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), national highways passing through Maharashtra accounted for 29 per cent of all road accident fatalities across the state in 2021.
According to data, of the total 13,911 casualties, 3,996 were reported on national highways. Maharashtra ranked third on casualties reported on national highways (NHs), followed by Uttar Pradesh (7,212) and Tamil Nadu (5,360).
This development came after former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry and his friend, Jehangir Pandole, were killed in a car crash on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad national highway at Palghar on Sunday, September 4.

However, it is pertinent to note that the number of highway casualties, however, is coming down in the state. Maharashtra saw a 21% drop in casualties in 2021. Yet, almost 4,000 people are still dying on the NHs. Most of them in the state are not fitted with speed cameras.
Compared to 5,083 deaths on national highways in pre-COVID 2019, Mounting speed cameras, stepping up enforcement and fixing road engineering issues has worked wonders on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, bringing down casualties by 52% between 2016 and 2020.
NCRB data showed most crashes on highways were reported between 6 pm and 9 pm. Rural areas witnessed 60% cases.
