The first phase of Sewage Tunnel under Mithi River Rejuvenation Project was successfully completed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). An event to mark the ‘breakthrough’ of this was held at Kurla Park on Tuesday, June 13.

This initiative has been taken to improve the water quality of Mithi river. By effectively purifying the river water, the project aims to restore ecological balance.

The tunnel is being constructed from Bapat nullah and Safed Pul nullah to the Dharavi Sewage Treatment Plant.

The total length of the tunnel is 6.70 km with a depth of 15 meters. Of which, the initial phase completed around 1.8 km. It is also the smallest sewage tunnel in India, with an internal diameter of 2.60 meters and an external diameter of 3.20 meters.

The second phase of the project will be taken up at Kanakia Zillion (SCLR Junction), Sahar-Kurla Road and the third phase at Bapat nullah. The project will have a total capacity to transport 400 million litres of sewage per day and currently, it will handle 168 million litres of non-monsoon flow per day.

It will start from Kurla Park and get completed at Santacruz-Chembur Link Road Junction. The length of this phase will be 1.80 km.

Meanwhile, in the third and final phase, a 3.10 km long tunnel will be dug from SCLR Junction to Bapat nullah.

About 43 per cent of the project has been completed and is expected to be completed by September 30, 2025.

Sewage transported through the tunnel will be treated at the plant at Dharavi and then released into the creek at Mahim Nature Park.
