The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has planned to set up four helipads along the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway, also known as the Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Samriddhi Highway.

These helipads are being set up to deal with possible emergencies including fatal accidents.

According to the plans, the first helipad will be constructed near the tunnel section between Khardi and Igatpuri. This section of the expressway is under construction.

The second will be at Shirdi and the other at Aurangabad. Officials are yet to finalise the location for the fourth helipad.

MSRDC officials have not decided the location for the fourth helipad. It is believed to be in Vidarbha between Aurangabad and Nagpur. An air ambulance facility will be set up at this helipad for the accident victims to receive treatment during the golden hour.

On May 26, the second phase of the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway was inaugurated by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The second leg of 80 km is between Shirdi and Bharveer, which is between Igatpuri and Nashik. Along with this, 600 km of the 701 km expressway is now open for vehicular traffic.

The section between Nagpur and Shirdi was inaugurated on December 11, 2022. The remaining 100 km stretch between Bharveer and Thane is expected to be completed by March 2024.

Earlier, MSRDC tried to bring Air Ambulance facility on Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has a similar plan on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway.
