With the frequency of COVID-19 positive cases still increasing in Mumbai, the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) has so far marked a total of  817 containment zones, while the number was just 721 earlier this week. Keeping this in mind, the authorities have decided to colour code containment zones across the city to make it easier to assess the risk in each region.

The zones will be marked under red, orange, and blue. While red zones represent tightly packed areas with confirmed COVID-19 infection, orange are for congested areas that have cases but can continue to operate with reduced strictness as compared to red zones, and blue zones are buildings that can manage the situation appropriately.

Speaking on the matter, a civic official said - “There was a need to categorise the zones in order to decide how many BMC and police personnel need to be deputed to patrol a particular area. Red zones require the strongest presence of the authorities for ensuring stricter vigil.”

Authorities are also talking about the challenges they will face to close down pockets in slums after they are designated as containment zones. “Many of those living in slums have a hand-to-mouth existence. If they sit at home, they know their families would go hungry. Hence, the authorities have a tough time convincing people living in slums to stay at home,” Sandeep Patel, a corporator from Goregaon said.

In some positive news, the lockdown appears to have had a positive effect on the wildlife with Mumbai seeing a 25% increase in flamingo migration
