The tender process for the third phase of the Mithi River Revitalization Project has finally been completed. A company from the Adani group has been selected for this work. The work worth INR 1700 crore will be awarded to this company. This includes many works such as construction of a protective wall and service road between CST Road, Kurla to Mahim Causeway, and laying of a drainage channel.
The Mithi River came into the limelight due to floods during heavy rains in 2005. In 2019, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) undertook the ‘Mithi River Revitalisation Project’. To increase the carrying and retaining capacity of the river, works such as deepening the river, constructing a tunnel using Japanese technology, creating artificial lakes and wetlands along the Mithi River, and keeping the river flowing all year round will be carried out.
The BMC had appointed consultants to control pollution in the Mithi River. Based on the technical and feasibility report submitted by these consultants, they have suggested short and long term measures. The consultant has suggested some works in four phases. Of these, the work in the third phase was stuck at the tender stage for the last few years. The tender process has now been completed and the contract for this work will be awarded to the Adani Group.
The Adani company had bid 7.7 percent more than the project price fixed by the BMC. Sources in the BMC said that this will cost the civic body another INR 100 crore. The BMC had once again floated a tender for these third phase works. After the response received, Adani Company was selected. The cost of this work is INR 1,700 crore. Additional Commissioner Abhijit Bangar informed that there will be an attempt to start the work before the code of conduct by issuing work orders soon.
In the third phase of this project, several works will be undertaken, including the construction of a retaining wall and service road along CST Road, from Kurla to Mahim Causeway. A stormwater drainage channel will be laid, and interceptor gate pumps will be installed to control sewage flow. Access roads will be built along the banks of the Mithi River to facilitate the transport of machinery and equipment. Additionally, a pedestrian promenade, similar to Marine Drive, will be developed as a recreational space for Mumbai residents.
The total length of the Mithi River is 17.84 km, of which 11.84 km is under the civic body area and 6 km is under the jurisdiction of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
